A best beer in the world It's Italian and is produced in Abruzzo: this was decreed by the tasting committees of the Brussels Beer Challenge, one of the most important international beer competitions, with 1.811 beers from 37 countries.
The prestigious Brussels Beer Challenge crowned the beer Millican Extra, produced by birificio artigianale Mezzopasso de Popoli, the province of PescaraLike “Best Beer of Competition” (Best Beer in the Competition).
This recognition makes Millican Extra the best beer in the world, surpassing competitors from all over the globe.
Belgium topped the entry list with 400 labels, followed by Italy (224), France (158), United States (143), China (133), Brasil (128) and Germany (103).
Features of Millican Extra: A true brewing jewel
Millican Extra, a Strong Ale, won over discerning palates with its enveloping amber hue and moderate alcohol content. A tribute to the fragrance and intensity of the best English malts, the beer displays a creamy, cream-colored foam. Its aroma reveals notes of caramel, hazelnut, chocolate and fresh fruits. When tasting, you experience the smoothness of malts, biscuits and oats, culminating in a dry and slightly bitter finish that invites you to take another sip.
Abruzzese pride: Gabriele Di Marcantonio and Bernardo Perfetti
The founders of birrificio Mezzopasso, Gabriele Di Marcantonio and Bernardo Perfetti, proudly received the award in Belgium, a country that symbolizes brewing tradition. Di Marcantonio expressed his satisfaction, stating that the trophy “gives great energy and confidence to all of us who work daily”.
Regarding the visibility that the award provides, Gabriele commented: “Competitions give you visibility beyond your usual work context, and with this award we hope for a very broad resonance — in a market that also in Italy is expanding and gaining its own value ”.
Brussels Beer Challenge 2023: Italian success and golden medals
In addition to the consecration of Millican Extra, other Italian craft beers were highlighted in the Brussels Beer Challenge 2023. With a total of 37 medals, Italy occupied second place in the overall table, behind only Belgium.
This solid performance puts Italy ahead of the Netherlands, who came in third.

Colorado is Brazil's highlight at the Brussels Beer Challenge; see medalists
A Colorado was Brazil's main highlight at the Brussels Beer Challenge in 2023. Originating from Ribeirão Preto (SP) and belonging to Ambev, the brand won the title of best national beer with Colorado Aipi Lager and secured four medals, including a gold medal.
In addition to Colorado, other Brazilian breweries also stood out, such as Brotas Beer and Leopoldina, which received two medals each.
