Brazilian author and theater director Carolina Bianchi, who places the radical experience of the body at the center of her works, will be awarded the Silver Lion at the 2025 Venice Dance Biennale.
The award, approved by the Board of Directors of the Venice Biennale, on the proposal of artistic director Wayne McGregor, will be presented during the 19th International Festival of Contemporary Dance, which will take place in the Italian city between July 17 and August 2.
The announcement was made this Friday (10).
Considered one of the main exponents of the South American experimental scene, Bianchi settled in Amsterdam in 2020 and three years later became a highlight at the Avignon Festival with “A Noiva e o Boa Noite Cinderela”, the first chapter of the trilogy “Cadela Força”, which brings together the testimonies of victims of sexual violence, such as the Italian performer Pippa Bacca.
The show was presented at major European festivals and stages, receiving a warm reception from audiences and critics. At the Venice Dance Biennale, the Brazilian will present the premiere of the second chapter of the trilogy “Cadela Força: A Irmandade”. This time, the work focuses on masculinity and the male gaze.
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement went to Twyla Tharp, the legendary American choreographer who, in her 60-year career, spanned eras and styles, making history.
The artist created her own company in 1965 and, since then, with her dance, she has freed bodies and minds from conventions and stereotypes, moving with experimental audacity through all genres – from tap to jazz, from postmodern to neoclassical – to reinvent herself.
“Twyla Tharp is nothing short of a phenomenon. Her revolutionary contributions to the ecology of global dance are unparalleled, thanks to work that combines rigor and play, classical discipline and ballet technique with modern dance and natural movement, for radically innovative choreography for both theater and film,” McGregor wrote, emphasizing that she “is one of the most important living choreographers.”HANDLE)
