Present in countries like the United Kingdom, France, and Spain, green road signs have also begun to attract attention in Italy. They are not mandatory, but they serve as a warning for drivers to reduce their speed.

How do green road signs work?

These signs are circular, with a white background and a central number. Visually, they resemble traditional speed limit signs. The difference is in the border: it's green, not red.

This detail indicates that it is a recommendation, not a legally binding rule. They are mainly used near schools, hospitals, and residential areas. The goal is to encourage more cautious driving. without imposing fines.

In Italy, this type of signage does not yet have official recognition. For it to be adopted, it would be necessary to revise the Highway Code, as well as conduct tests and studies on its effectiveness.

The debate and criticism of the proposal

Although some support the measure, experts point out problems. The main one is the risk of confusion with official signs, which have a similar appearance but imply a fine in case of non-compliance.

Another critical point is the excessive amount of signage. In Italian cities, many drivers already deal with an excess of signs, lane markings, and warnings. This can compromise attention while driving.

Cases like that of Sassuolo, where eight identical signs were installed in just 300 meters, illustrate the problem. In Florence, 30 signs were put up with a spelling error: “infomazione” instead of “informazione”.

For now, green road signs are not part of Italian roads. But the debate about safety and clarity in traffic continues among authorities, drivers, and experts.
