By 321 to 259 votes, the Italian Chamber of Deputies decided this Monday, 18, keep Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in office.
“The Chamber voted to trust the communications of the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, on the political situation”, says a note issued by the legislative house.
Conte's big challenge will be this Tuesday (19), with the vote of confidence in the Senate, where the prime minister is still seeking the necessary support to remain in power.
The strongest hypothesis at the moment is that the government will achieve a relative majority thanks to an abstention from Itália Viva, but this would leave it in a weak position.
According to calculations by the Italian press, Conte would have around 154 votes in the Senate today (out of a total of 320) and would need seven more to ensure an absolute majority. However, a possible abstention from IV would lower the minimum quorum and allow for a majority
relative.
Political instability in Italy: 66 governments in 75 years
Italy is experiencing a new political crisis that threatened Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte's permanence in office.
The shake-up in the ministerial office came after the Itália Viva party disembarked from the governing coalition – since then, Conte has been looking for allies to stay in office and avoid calling new elections.
“Irresponsibility” – Conte spoke for 55 minutes in the Chamber of Deputies and spared no indirect criticism of Renzi, who broke with the government because he disagreed with its policies in relation to European Union funds.
