For the fifth consecutive year, Milan, Italy, will not hold its New Year's Eve party in Piazza del Duomo, one of the main tourist attractions in the capital of Lombardy.
The announcement was made by the city's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, last Tuesday (3), who justified the decision due to the high costs of the celebration.
“To hold a beautiful party in Milan, it costs 1 million euros (R$6,3 million). We have cuts everywhere and my government is cutting even more than previous administrations, so if I have to choose, I prefer to invest this money in other sectors,” said Sala.
According to the Milanese mayor, many people are looking to the municipal government for financial support, such as “the 20 representatives of Milanese theaters” who met with him earlier this week.
“The city government has fewer and fewer resources. It’s not just La Scala [the most important theater in Milan] that receives sponsorship. It’s a delicate matter and I prefer to put that 1 million [euros] somewhere else,” Sala concluded. (HANDLE)
