The Italian government confirmed this Friday (25) that Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and Congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro, sons of President Jair Bolsonaro, requested recognition of dual citizenship.
In a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies, the undersecretary of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Gianmarco Mazzi, said that Flávio and Eduardo asked in 2020 to “join the waiting list of the consular chancellery of the Italian Embassy in Brasília to be formally summoned for recognition of citizenship jus sanguinis.”
The statement was made in response to a parliamentary interrogation made by deputy Angelo Bonelli, exponent of the left-wing Europa Verde party. “No request to this effect was received from President Bolsonaro,” added Mazzi.
Also according to the undersecretary, the citizenship recognition process does not provide for “discretionary assessments”, only confirmation that the “interested party meets the requirements established” by legislation.
Bolsonaro's paternal great-grandfather was from Anguillara Veneta, a northern Italian municipality that granted honorary citizenship to the president last year. The agent's maternal grandparents were from Lucca, in Tuscany.
