Italy celebrates 'explosion' of pasta exports during the pandemic

One glimmer of hope for Italy's industry is the boom in food exports during the coronavirus crisis. 

More olive oil and cheese have arrived in European Union homes in recent months. But no other food could compete with Italy's versatile, easy-to-prepare staple – pasta.

Germans' craving for it during the pandemic, for example, led to a 20% annual increase in exports of various pastas to Germany.

“Germany is the number one export market for us,” said Luigi Scordamaglia of the food association Filiera Italia, to the DPA news agency, saying that pasta consumption “exploded” in the pandemic.
