Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Monday (18) that her country had joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, the main Brazilian flag bearer at the head of the G20, with great “conviction”.
During the first session of the summit in Rio de Janeiro, the head of government highlighted that food security was one of the “priority challenges” for the Italian presidency of the G7, which launched an initiative that will operate “in synergy” with the alliance announced by the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
“Cooperation between the G7 and G20 can be decisive in finding concrete and effective solutions to the complexity of the challenges of our time,” said the prime minister, adding that they are increasingly “interconnected”.
Meloni assessed that eradicating poverty and hunger in the world is one of the “most ambitious and complex challenges”, and further stated that “Russian aggression against a sovereign state” led to the use of wheat as an instrument of war, which “mainly affected the weakest nations”.
“To achieve food security, we must first and foremost defend the right of each people and each nation to choose the production model and food system that they consider most appropriate to their characteristics. A stronger relationship between territory, people and labor also allows us to obtain higher quality food and sustainable production chains,” said the Prime Minister.
A Italian leader He further noted that Rome is a "privileged observer and protagonist in the shared journey to build sustainable, fair and resilient food systems."
Finally, Meloni assessed that there are no “pre-established solutions that are the same for everyone”, but it would be necessary to “build new models based on the strengths and good practices of the different food systems”. (Per Handle)
