According to the newspaper Corriere della Sera, Marcell Jacobs' injury to his left quadriceps in the 100-meter final at the Birmingham European Championships exposed the crisis in Italian sprinting. The 32-year-old athlete is expected to recover, but his career remains dependent on his muscular response. Filippo Tortu, another hero of the Tokyo 4x100 relay, has only run the 200 meters six times in the last two years and withdrew from the European Championships, it is unclear whether due to injury or lack of fitness.
Jacobs won the 100 meters and the 4x100 relay at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, a result that brought young people to the athletics tracks in Italy. The newspaper assesses that this effect has worn off. Chituru Ali finished the 100-meter final limping, with a time of 10.34 seconds. Lorenzo Patta is stuck at 10.25 seconds. Faustino Desalu, also 32 years old, alternates between good and weak performances. Ceccarelli and Randazzo were eliminated in the qualifying rounds.
According to Corriere della Sera, there was a lack of coordination after Tokyo. Fidal, the Italian athletics federation, failed to convince Salvino Tortu to technically separate from his son Filippo, nor did it monitor Chituru Ali's trajectory, who competed in Como, Rome, and Los Angeles. The relay team meetings before the championships were short and often ignored by the leading athletes. France opted not to send any sprinters to the European Championships; Italy sent ten men and nine women.
