Drivers over 85 years old could be subject to three restrictions in Italy: no highways, an absolute ban on driving after consuming alcohol, and travel permitted only within a 100-kilometer radius of their residence or usual dwelling. These rules are in the draft of the new Highway Code, submitted by the Ministry of Infrastructure to industry associations, which have until September 13th to respond, according to the newspaper Il Messaggero.
The current system already provides for more frequent renewals based on age in categories AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, and BE: every 10 years until age 50, every 5 years until age 70, every 3 years until age 80, and every 2 years thereafter. The proposal maintains this structure but creates new age brackets. From age 80 onwards, the biennial renewal would require certification from a geriatrician. From age 85 onwards, renewal would continue to be biennial, but with limitations. From age 90, it would be annual, also with limitations.
The restrictions would appear on the driver's license itself, using codes: 62 for a 100-kilometer radius, 67 for highway driving bans, and 68 for driving under the influence of alcohol. These would be applied automatically when the renewal was done by the same doctor, such as those at driving schools, licensing agencies, and health clinics.
