According to the RaiNews portal, a fire followed by an explosion struck the KNDS Ammo Italy ammunition factory, formerly Simmel Difesa, in Colleferro, near Rome. The explosion occurred in the Quarto Chilometro area, along the Via Latina, between Colleferro and Artena, and the blast was clearly heard by residents. According to rescue sources, there are no injuries or people involved, and the 24 workers who were on site are safe. The accident reportedly occurred in the explosive pressing area.
The company produces medium and large caliber ammunition for land and naval defense, as well as solid fuels for aerospace vehicles. The area occupied by the factory is very extensive, and preliminary information indicates that the fire and explosion only affected one sector of the explosives production and storage unit. Firefighters arrived at the scene, but initially were unable to intervene. The fire remained active, and containment efforts were underway.
Velletri prosecutor Carlo Villani has opened an investigation. The current hypothesis is arson. Carabinieri officers from Colleferro and the Frascati Investigative Unit are participating in the investigation to reconstruct the dynamics of the explosion.
