Study shows that Italians have mistaken ideas about immigrants

Most think that the rate of foreigners in the country is 30%, when in reality it is 8%

By Gina Marques

A report by Italy's parliamentary commission on intolerance, xenophobia and racism, released on July 6, shows that a portion of the population believes there are more immigrants in the country than statistics show.

According to the survey, the majority of Italians think that the immigrant rate in the country is 30%, when in reality it is 8%. The same study reveals that around 56,4% of Italians believe that there are many immigrants and 52,6% think that the increase in the number of immigrants favors the spread of crime and terrorism.

Another report, released by the Antigone association, which defends human rights and guarantees of the penitentiary system, also contradicts the idea that the majority of offenders are foreigners.

The document concludes that the number of foreign detainees in Italy has fallen by half in the last 10 years. These 13.490 non-European prisoners represent 22,9% of the total number of prisoners.

Another interesting fact is in relation to Social Security in Italy. According to the organization, with the country's low birth rate, the presence of regular immigrants, who work and pay taxes, will be essential to pay for pensions for the elderly.

CASES OF RACIST AGGRESSIONS

Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, leader of the far-right and ultranationalist League party, denies an increase in the number of racist attacks in the country, despite some cases having been highlighted in the press in recent times.

One of them is the attack against the Italian discus throwing champion, Daisy Osakue, of Nigerian origin. She was hit in the eye by an egg thrown from a moving car.but the Public Ministry denied the racist nature of the episode.

In Italy, there are no official statistics on crimes of racism and xenophobia in the last two months. The only data available is the study by journalist Luigi Mastrodonato, who published an interactive map with all the latest attacks.

According to him, since June 1, the day the new government formed by the League and the 5-Star Movement took office, there have been 30 racist physical attacks, an average of one every two days.
