After almost 10 days of negotiations, former European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi accepted the position of Prime Minister of Italy on Friday (12) and presented a list of ministers to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.
The 73-year-old economist and professor had been summoned by the head of state on February 3 and, after two rounds of consultations with political parties, “dissolved” the reservation with which he had accepted the task of forming a government.
Draghi and his ministers will take office at noon (8 am in Brasília) this Saturday (13), at the Quirinale Palace, headquarters of the Presidency.
The team will be made up of 23 ministers, 15 men and eight women, and includes representatives from all the main parties that have declared support for Draghi, including seven from the previous administration.
This will be the 67th government in almost 75 years of history republican in Italy and the third only in the current legislature, which began in March 2018.
The emergence of the new Executive ends a month of political crisis in the country, after former prime minister Matteo Renzi, from the centrist party Itália Viva (IV), withdrew his support for the government of Giuseppe Conte, who ended up being forced to resign for having lost a majority in the Senate.
