The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, stated this Wednesday (19) that Italians abroad are the country's best ambassadors in the world and that is why they are a priority for Giorgia Meloni's government.
The statement was made by the Italian Foreign Minister during a plenary assembly of the General Council of Italians Abroad (CGIE), held at the Farnesina headquarters in Rome.
After thanking the Council members “for the work done and for the pride with which they carry Italy's name to the world”, Tajani recalled his commitment to strengthening the consular network, with the opening of new offices.
The head of Italian diplomacy cited the openings made in Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Casablanca, Dubai, Los Angeles, Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt, Toronto, to guarantee more services to Italians living outside the country, that is, more than 7 million of people, in addition to the 2 thousand detainees and 550 children disputed or kidnapped.
“Already today, for example, all Italians living abroad can download their tax code online and obtain an electronic identity card at 170 embassies or consulates around the world” and “we will work hard to improve citizenship procedures and voting methods” .
At the same time, the Vice Prime Minister of Italy guaranteed that the Meloni government will be inflexible “in combating any irregularity in the procedures for acquiring citizenship and issuing visas”.
“To this end, we have reinforced the inspection teams by supporting inspectors with carabinieri and financiers and we are already taking measures to ensure that cases like those that we would never like to discover do not occur”, he guaranteed.
Finally, Tajani wanted to reiterate the importance of the “roots tourism” project, which aims to encourage the discovery by Italians living abroad of their families' places of origin.
“For the Jubilee, we also started a dialogue with the Vatican to carry out a project of the same content, but on 'Root Churches'”, he concluded. (HANDLE)
