“We made mistakes”: one month after the campaign to not stop, the region has 4,8 deaths
Interviewed for the program “Che tempo che fa”, shown on RAI, the main Italian broadcaster, the mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, acknowledged, this Thursday (26/3), that he was wrong to support the campaign “Milan does not stop ”.
Launched exactly one month ago, the campaign encouraged city residents to continue economic and social activities, even with the new coronavirus pandemic.
When the hashtag first started spreading online, on February 26, Lombardy, a region in northern Italy, had 258 people infected with the virus, and the entire country had recorded 12 deaths. “Many people are referring to that video that was circulating with the title #MilanDoesNotStop. It was February 27, the video was exploding on social media, and everyone shared it, including me. Right or wrong? Probably wrong,” Sala acknowledged.
“Nobody had yet understood the capacity of the virus, and that was the spirit. I work seven days a week to do my part, and I accept criticism,” he said.
Today, Milan is one of the three provinces in Italy most affected by Covid-19, registering 6.922 cases of infected people. Lombardy is the region of Italy most affected by Covid-19, recording 34.889 cases of infected people and 4.861 deaths, according to a Civil Defense report released this Thursday, March 26, representing 59,2% of deaths in the country .

The campaign video went viral on the internet amid the numerous cases of virus contamination in the country and after the government decided to confine 11 cities in northern Italy, where the first cases of internal transmission of the disease had been recorded. The production shown extolled the “miracles” performed “every day” by the citizens of Milan and their “unthinkable rhythms” and “important economic results”. “Because, every day, we are not afraid. Milan doesn’t stop”, stated the content expressed in the video.
Sala also recalled that the invitation to “not stop” came from several political parties and that even Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, was opposed to the closure of offices and stores.
Situation in Italy
Italy's Civil Defense announced this Thursday (26) that the number of deaths in the country due to the new coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) rose to 8.215, an increase of 722 victims in one day.
In total, the country has 80.539 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.
