The Italian Consulate General in São Paulo released the results of its activities in 2023, highlighting significant growth in several areas.
Among the data presented, there was a 25% increase in the issuance of passports, totaling 33.643 documents, compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, a 16% growth was recorded in the recognition of citizenship by blood right, reaching the mark of 7.844.
According to information shared on social media, the Consulate counted 43.750 new registered in the Registry of Italians Resident Abroad (Aire), representing an increase of 51% compared to the previous year.
The institution also promoted 50 integrated promotion events, reaching a total audience of 25 thousand people, and recorded the virtual participation of 10 million internet users.
Despite the positive results, the Italian consul general in São Paulo, Domenico Fornara, expressed a critical stance in relation to the consulate’s performance: “Are we happy with the work carried out in 2023? Yes. Are we satisfied? Absolutely not. We will remain committed to serving the almost 350 Italians registered in our network,” he stated.
The release of the data generated mixed reactions in consulate page on Facebook. While some users praised the results, highlighting the significant increase in the granting of citizenships and passports, others expressed dissatisfaction, especially regarding the difficulty in scheduling.

One user mentioned the impossibility of scheduling, comparing the process to a mafia and criticizing the need for payment.

Another criticism pointed to the judicialization of consular services in Italy, suggesting that the consulate in São Paulo faces considerable challenges.
