Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani sparked controversy by declaring on Thursday (22) that “Being Italian is not linked to seven generations”, precisely at a time when his ministry is intensely promoting the “Roots Tourism” program, which seeks to reconnect Italian descendants with their origins.

The contradiction raises questions about the coherence of Italian policies in relation to national identity and the valorization of ancestry.

The program, under the responsibility of Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (of which he is also a minister), aimed mainly at Italian descendants, especially in Brazil, where one of the largest communities of Italian descendants in the world resides, seeks to strengthen the connection with Italian roots.

Through specific actions and visits to the regions of origin of your ancestors, “Roots Tourism” highlights the importance of family and cultural traditions, providing an experience of rediscovering Italian origins.

However, the initiative contrasts sharply with Tajani's statements, which appear to downplay the value of ancestral heritage by stating that Italian identity should not be defined solely by family lineage.

The difference reveals an inconsistency in the way the Italian government presents itself. At the same time that it wants to modernize the national identity with increasingly multicultural features, reinforcing the ancestral connection through projects such as “Root Tourism”, the government continues to devalue its descendants.

Such a contradiction suggests a political dilemma: how to reconcile an inclusive and contemporary vision of citizenship with the appreciation of family traditions that shaped Italy's history?

So far, the “Root Tourism” program has proven effective in attracting the interest of Italian descendants, but it has also been noted for its potential to transform into a customer acquisition tool to a select group of commercial partners.

The main criticism is that Italy, a country rich in history and culture, should not rely solely on commercial strategies to maintain links with its origins, but should respect its children abroad and create effective inclusion tools.

The challenge for the government, and for figures like Tajani, is to find a way to integrate these two perspectives in a cohesive way, without falling into contradictions that could undermine the credibility of the initiatives promoted.
