The year 2024 promises new routes and rail options connecting Italy to various European destinations.

With that in mind, we gathered here at Italianism a guide to the main direct rail routes from Italy to neighboring countries such as France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia, with connections to Germany.

Night trains from major cities

If you are departing from Rome or Florence, you can travel directly to Villach, Salzburg, Vienna, or Munich via the network. night jet, operated by the Austrian company ÖBB. This is currently the only direct international rail route from these two major Italian cities.

Additionally, cities such as Bologna, Milan, Venice, Genoa, La Spezia, Verona, Ancona, and several others along the route, have direct overnight trains to Vienna or Munich via the same line.

The route from Venice, passing through Vicenza and Udine, makes it possible to go deeper into Germany, reaching Stuttgart via Munich.

France

To Paris, leaving Milan, there are daily trains via Turin, departing from Milan Central Station ou Milan Porta Garibaldi, depending on the chosen operator. It is also possible to travel directly from Milan to Lyon via Turin.

It is worth noting that, due to ongoing works on the Fréjus Railway Tunnel after a landslide, the service TGV from Milano Porta Garibaldi to Paris is closed until summer 2024.

Leaving the Italian border town of Ventimiglia, it is possible to reach Nice, Cannes and Grasse via Menton, Monte Carlo and Antibes. Daily express trains to Ventimiglia depart from Milan, and there are regional trains from Genoa.

Austria (and Germany)

From Bologna there are trains EuroCity that pass through Verona, Trento, Bolzano, Brennero, arriving at Innsbruck and Munich. There is also one EuroCity train per day from Venice to these destinations Monday to Friday, stopping in Padua and Vicenza, and two on weekends.

Railjet trains run twice daily from Venice to Vienna via Villach, with stops at other Italian and Austrian cities along the way, plus two daily regional trains from Udine to Villach via Tarvisio.

A daily train service from Bolzano It takes passengers to Vienna, passing through Innsbruck, Salzburg and Linz. There are also trains S-Bahn to Innsbruck every hour from Brennero, and hourly trains from Fortezza to Lienz.

Switzerland (and Germany)

Several EuroCity trains depart daily from Milan to Lugano and Zurich, passing through Como and several Swiss cities. One of these trains to Zurich departs Venice daily, with stops in Padua, Vicenza and Verona, among other cities; another leaves from Genoa; and a third from Bologna.

There is also a twice-daily EuroCity service running from Milan to Basel via Como, Lugano and Lucerne, plus hourly 'Ticino' regional trains from Milan to Locarno via Como and Lugano.

A daily train service from Milan central station takes passengers to Frankfurt, with stops in Bern, Basel and several other cities along the way in Italy, Switzerland and Germany.

If your destination is further west, there are daily trains from Milan to Geneva via Domodossola, Brig and Lausanne, one of which originates in Venice and stops in Padua and Verona.

In addition, there are several daily services from Milan to Basel via Domodossola, Brig and Bern.

Finally, the railway network Rhaetian connects Tirano to St. Moritz, with several trains departing daily; while the Bernina Express connects Tirano to Chur.

Eslovenia

There is a daily EuroCity train service from Trieste to Ljubljana, Maribor and Graz, then on to Vienna.
