On the 29th of each month, Italian restaurants in Curitiba and São Paulo celebrate the Nhoque da fortuna. The practice consists of eating seven gnocchi standing up, with one order for each, while a note or coin is placed under the plate.

The tradition goes back to a legend from the 4th century. According to the story, Saint Pantaleon, disguised as a wanderer, was welcomed by a humble family. They offered him what they had: a simple plate of gnocchi. After the meal, they found gold coins under the plates. The episode symbolizes the reward for generosity.

Inspired by this story, many restaurants in Brazil recreate the ritual monthly. In Curitiba, the custom has gained strength in traditional restaurants in the city, as a way of preserving ties with Italian culture and attracting customers in search of luck and prosperity.

In São Paulo, establishments of the Bixiga, a neighborhood with a strong Italian presence, also offers special menus on the 29th. Customers are invited to participate in the complete ritual, reinforcing the link between popular faith, family tradition and gastronomy.
