Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been named the most powerful person in Europe by US news website “Politico”, which called her “a representative of the increasingly radical zeitgeist that is flourishing on both sides of the Atlantic”.
To justify the choice, the portal used Meloni's proximity to billionaire Elon Musk, a future member of President-elect Donald Trump's government and one of the main financiers of the Republican campaign.
“Who do you call when you want to talk to Europe? If you’re Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and a top aide to President-elect Donald Trump, the number you call belongs to Giorgia Meloni,” wrote Politico.
In less than a decade, according to the American website, the leader of the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party “went from being considered a crazy ultranationalist to being elected prime minister and establishing herself as a figure with whom Brussels and now Washington can do business”.
The portal also defines the Meloni government as “one of the most stable in post-war Italy”, thanks to a secure majority in Parliament, and highlights that the prime minister “minimized her rhetoric against the European Union and avoided clashes with Brussels”, also emerging “as one of the most convinced supporters of Ukraine”.
“Politico” claims that Meloni took advantage of the “power vacuum” left by France and Germany in the EU to advance his policies, especially in the area of migration, and may now gain “new momentum” with Trump’s return to the White House. (HANDLE)
