With a cost of living above the national average, live in Rome demands more than the typical salary received by those living in other regions of Italy.

The capital attracts thousands of foreigners. In 2025, the city will have 354.922 foreign residents, equivalent to 12,9% of the population. However, despite its worldwide fame, Roma does not lead the salary ranking in the country.

Average wages

According to the observatory Job pricing, in 2023, the average annual gross salary in Roma was €33.839, which represents approximately €1.926 net per month, considering 12 installments. Milan, on the other hand, has the highest average in the country, with €37.661 gross per year — 3.138 a month.

Data from the Ministry of Economy indicate that the declared average in Rome was even lower: €30.173. In neighborhoods like Parioli, the average income exceeds €70 per year. (€5.833 per month), while in Ostia Antica it drops to €16.611 (€1384 per month).

Cost of living

The main expense for those living in Rome is rent. In June 2025, the average price reached €17,17 per square meter—26% above the Italian average. In upscale areas like Piazza Navona or Spanish Steps, the value may exceed €36/m².

According to the portal Numbeo, renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs, on average, €1.149. Outside the center, this amount drops to around €764.

Furthermore, food costs a lot. Association estimates Altroconsumo point out that a family in Rome spends between €7.100 and €7.700 per year on groceries, which represents up to €640 per month.

Other costs include public transport, with a monthly pass costing €35, and restaurant meals: a full dinner for two people costs around €65.

What is considered a good salary

To live with the basics in Rome, according to the website Livingcost.org, a single person needs at least €1.553 net per month — an amount that covers rent, bills and food.

For a family of four to live comfortably, the portal Facile.it estimates a minimum income of €4.400 per month.

In practice, it's possible to maintain a reasonable life in Rome on an average salary if you live alone. However, raising children or supporting a family requires a higher income, even with two salaries.
