Drivers in Italy are required to replace winter tires with summer models. The measure, in force since 2014, aims to ensure road safety and prevent improper use of tires outside the cold season.
However, the replacement is not mandatory for everyone. Find out below who should make the replacement, how to check the requirement and what can happen in case of non-compliance.
Who should change tires?
The obligation only applies to vehicles with winter tires marked with M + S (mud and snow) or with the symbol of the snowflake on a mountain, whose speed index is less than that indicated in the registration certificate of the vehicle (Circulation chart).
If winter tires have an index equal to or higher than that specified in the document, replacement is not necessary.
Vehicles with tires four Seasons (marked with “4S” or “all season”) are also exempt from the requirement.
How do I know if I need to change it?
The speed index (speed code) is a letter engraved on the side of the tire, right after the load index. It indicates the maximum speed that can be safely supported.
For example, the letter Q represents up to 160 km/h; S, up to 180 km/h; and the T, up to 190 km/h. The same index is present on the registration certificate, usually in the lower left section.
If the winter tire has a lower index than the registered one, it is mandatory to replace it with summer tires.
What happens if I don't switch?
The fine for non-compliance can reach € 1.695 (approximately BRL 10.800), in addition to the obligation to go through the review (vehicle inspection). The exchange must be made between April 15th and May 15th.
Is it worth changing even without obligation?
Yes. Even without legal requirements, summer tires offer better grip, braking and fuel consumption when temperatures exceed 7°C.
Fabio Bertolotti, director of the Italian association Assorubber, recommends: “the ideal is to use tires that are suitable for the season, not only out of respect for the law, but to ensure the best performance of the vehicle in any weather conditions”.
How much does it cost to change tires?
If you already have summer tires, the cost is between €40 and €70 just for the assembly. A new set of medium tires costs about € 300.
What about motorcycles?
Motorcycles are not required to use winter tires. However, if they are equipped with them and the speed index is lower than the registered one, they will need to be replaced.
Local rules may vary
Officially, the deadline to replace winter tires with summer models ended this Thursday, May 15, but the Italian Traffic Code allow that regions and provinces adapt the deadline to your climate reality.
