The "forgotten money" of Tax Free: the form that Brazilians ignore and costs up to 15% of each purchase.

The "forgotten money": the form that Brazilians don't ask for in European stores and that is expensive.

Thousands of euros in taxes are left behind every month at airports across Europe.

Did you know that when you buy an iPhone, perfume, or that designer handbag in Portugal or Italy, a considerable portion of the price doesn't belong to the store or to you? That's the VAT. (Value Added Tax), which can reach 23% in Portugal e 22% in Italy.

What many people don't know, or forget in the rush of things, is that the government allows this amount to be refunded. But in 2026, the digital bureaucracy The game has changed, and those who don't know the "ins and outs" are unknowingly funding the European government.

The mistake of thinking "I'm a European citizen, so I can't"

This is the biggest myth. Although the Tax free Whether intended for residents outside the European Union, there are three situations where Brazilians considered "European" lose money:

  1. Brazilians with dual citizenship: If you live in Brazil but use a European passport to enter, you has the right to reimbursement, provided proof of residency in Brazil is provided.
  2. Recent residents: If you don't yet have a permanent residence permit and only have a tourist visa or are in the process of obtaining one, many shops still allow you to obtain the form.
  3. Gifts for Brazil: If you are buying something to take permanently to Brazil, a refund is your right upon leaving the bloc.

The "secret weapon": digital forms in 2026

Forget about the mess of stapled papers and airport queues. Today, the system is... e-Taxfree.

The fatal detail: The store will ask for your passport (or a copy). If the seller doesn't register your CPF (Brazilian tax identification number) or passport in the customs digital system at that moment, the money is lost.

The secret: You need to ask for it. "Tax Free Form" at the time of purchaseIt's no use going back to the store the next day with the receipt.

The final warning: the airport

The most common mistake is checking your luggage in before going to the customs counter. (Customs).

Golden rule: The customs officer may ask to see the product. If your new iPhone is inside the suitcase that has already been checked into the hold of the plane, they will not stamp the form and you will lose the refund.

Last week I bought an iPhone at the Apple store in Madrid. The store filled out the form using my passport details. Three days before my return trip, I went to T4 Barajas airport and registered the form at a kiosk using the barcode. Since I bought the product with a Wise card, the refund was credited the next day. Very simple and efficient. There's no secret and no need for intermediaries.
