The number of foreign nurses registered with the National Federation of Orders of Nursing Professions in Italy increased consistently until 2025. The new report... DataCornerA study published by FNOPI shows that 45.433 professionals born outside of Italy are part of the national registry.
The survey also indicates that 25.768 nurses hold foreign citizenship, representing 5,6 percent of the total.
Countries with the highest number of professionals
The data shows that Romanians make up the largest group among professionals born abroad.
There are 14.526 registered, followed by 3.365 Albanians and 3.169 Swiss. Peru (2.620), Poland (2.500), Germany (2.415), India (2.358), France (1.014), Moldova (863) and Brazil (773) appear next. The report also distinguishes origin by citizenship, offering a more detailed view of the foreign presence.

Ranking by citizenship
In the ranking by citizenship, Romania occupies first place with 12.127 registered nurses. The country registered an increase of 136 professionals compared to the previous survey. Albania appears in second place, with 2.121 nurses. India comes in third, with 1.946 registered nurses. Poland occupies fourth position, with 1.834 professionals. However, this number shows a decrease for the first time.

Effect of changes in Poland
The reduction in the Polish contingent may be linked to recent changes in the country. Poland approved a package of salary adjustments for nurses and midwives, which came into effect on July 1, 2025. The increase may have reduced the migration of professionals to other countries. European countriesincluding Italy. The report suggests this possible relationship by presenting updated figures.
Increasing diversity in the sector
The survey also highlights the presence of professionals from Peru, Ukraine, Moldova, Spain, Cameroon, and Tunisia.
