When you walk into a mechanic's workshop in Italy, garage, you come across a universe full of specific terms that, in addition to designating parts and services, carry stories and linguistic curiosities.

Knowing this vocabulary not only makes communication easier, but also enriches your understanding of Italian automotive culture.

The origin of the word “macchina”

In Italian, the word for “car” is “macchina.” Interestingly, “macchina” derives from the Latin “machina,” which means “machine” or “engine.” Over the centuries, the term evolved to refer to any type of machine, including automobiles. Thus, when Italians speak of their carros, are literally referring to their “machines”.

Technical terms and their peculiarities

Italian automotive language is rich in terms that may sound strange to Portuguese speakers. For example, “parabrezza” (windshield) combines “para” (to protect) and “brezza” (breeze), indicating its function as a wind shield.

“Faro” (lighthouse) comes from the Greek “pharos”, in reference to the famous Tower of Pharos, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which served as a guide for sailors.

Idiomatic expressions related to cars

Italians have several idiomatic expressions involving automobiles. “It’s a machine” (to be a machine) is used to describe someone who works extremely efficiently. Another expression is “andare a tutto gas” (to go at full throttle), which means to drive very fast or do something with maximum energy.
