Young people and students walked 25 km to call for an end to wars.
Thousands of people participated this Sunday (9) in the Perugia-Assisi Peace March, in Italy, to fight against war, violence and the indifference of international organizations.
The event brought together 100 people, according to the organizers, from 500 cities. Many of the participants were young people and students from Amatrice, a municipality devastated by an earthquake on August 24th.
Protesters carried flags and criticized entities and people who think it is not their place to “get involved” in social problems or conflicts.
The Peace March covered 25 kilometers, from Perugia to Rocca de Assis, and took representatives of NGOs, political parties, student organizations and journalists' associations.
One of the banners welcomed foreigners to Europe. “This is the meaning of the demonstration this year,” said Flavio Lotti, one of the organizers of the March. “Peace is not something abstract, it is not just the absence of wars, but rather the welcoming of people fleeing tragedies”.
Pope Francis also sent a message to participants in the event, saying that “war is always destructive and makes us lose everything.” (by ANSA)
