Lucca is located on a plain at the foot of the Apuan Alps and is less than half an hour from the coast of Versilia. As it is not a village on top of a hill, it is ideal for anyone with mobility problems, as well as being perfect for those who want to take a break from the steep climbs ;).

A journey through ancient history

Lucca is not only a city rich in history, but also a birthplace for thousands of Italian descendants in Brazil.

Most of the attractions in Lucca today display their ancient history, from the trace of the Roman amphitheater that can be seen in the shape of the Amphitheater Square to the archaeological remains beneath the 12th-century church of Saints Giovanni e Reparata, which have connections to the city's first cathedral, located just next to the current cathedral of San Martino.

Furthermore, Lucca maintains the walls that surrounded the ancient city, which is not the case in many other cities in Tuscany, including Florence.

As the walls lost their military importance, the top of them became a pedestrian promenade, today one of Lucca's main attractions.

The area around the walls is well maintained, with green lawns and trees everywhere along the walls. They have essentially become a park that surrounds the city and blocks out more modern life.

Here, you can enjoy a bike ride around the entire perimeter, a stroll while sipping a gelato or simply a period of rest on one of the many shaded benches that line the main promenade.
