Important clarification

Voting in Italy is not mandatory. No one is obligated to vote, and Italian citizenship is not lost by not participating in elections. Citizenship, recognized by right of blood, remains valid even if the citizen does not vote.

Voting procedures

If you do not intend to travel to Italy to vote, the “cardboard-avviso” It can be kept as a souvenir or recycled. For those who wish to vote, it is recommended to arrive at the municipality the day before voting to obtain the "electoral card", required to vote. In larger municipalities, the process may be more bureaucratic.

Travel discounts

A “avviso cardboard” mentions travel discounts (travel agency) for transport within Italy:

  • Rail travel: Discounts between 60% and 70% on second class tickets, although the process involves some bureaucracy.
  • Air travel: Discount of up to 40 euros on domestic flights, round trip.
  • Motorway tolls: There are discounts, but application can be complicated, requiring documentation to be presented at each toll booth.

AIRE registration community

The registration community AIR is where an Italian citizen residing outside of Italy is considered “virtually” resident. There are three main reasons for a specific commune to be your AIRE registration commune:

  1. Recognition before 1998: If your citizenship was recognized before 1998, your AIRE comune may be the Comune di Roma, especially if your ancestor resided in Rome before emigrating.
  2. Ancestor's last residence: Your AIRE comune may be the last comune of residence of your Italian ancestor.
  3. Last residence in Italy: If you have recognized your citizenship or resided in Italy, your comune AIRE will be your last comune of residence.
