Italy becomes a favorite destination for music tourism

Music festivals have boosted tourism and the economy in Italy

Besides culinary enthusiasts, Italy has also won over music lovers. The country is a favorite destination for tourists traveling for musical interests, leaving behind Germany, Austria, France, and the United Kingdom.

The information came from a report on musical tourism in Italy and Veneto, produced under the curatorship of Fondazione Santagata, for the association “Economia della Cultura”, which promotes the development of the economy in the cultural goods sector. The research will be presented on Monday (10), at the CUOA Foundation, one of the first business schools in Italy.

These travelers want to attend lyrical operas and concerts in the most beautiful Italian theaters, as well as participate in musical festivals and visit the places of origin of great classical composers, such as Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Donizetti.

Taking advantage of their trip to the country, tourists end up broadening their cultural experience in the territory, visiting museums and villages. The study also points out that the music tourist is demanding and invests heavily in quality experiences. This traveler is autonomous in organizing their trips (about 80% plan them alone) and usually travels with friends who are also passionate about music.

According to the study, approximately 72% of these tourists use the internet to search for travel information and choose their destination. From the prestigious performance halls to the high craftsmanship of scenography, Italy stands out with a vast lyrical and artistic offering.

The Teatro alla Scala, in Milan, receives 250 visitors a year, and the Teatro La Fenice, in Venice, 160 visitors, which puts it ahead of even important museums in the city in terms of attendance.

Finally, music festivals have boosted tourism and the economy in Italy. The Caracalla Festival in 2017 generated €4,1 million thanks to its 77.610 spectators. The Macerata Opera Festival reached 36.500 spectators, with over €1,2 million in sales.

The Rossini Opera Festival, in 2018, reached 18.260 spectators, with almost 1,4 million in revenue. In this case, 67% of the audience was made up of foreigners. (By ANSA)
