According to INGV, tremors are falling in the country, compared to the last three years
Italy recorded an earthquake every 30 minutes in 2019. According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the country had 16.584 seismological events – more than 45 earthquakes per day.
Despite the high number, seismic activity in Italy is decreasing. In 2018, the country recorded 23.180 tremors; in 2017 there were 44 thousand. Numbers well below the 2016 record when the country recorded 53 earthquakes.

In 2019, the largest event of magnitude, 4,5º, was recorded in Mugello on December 9th.
According to data from INGV, around 90% of seismic events located in Italy in 2019 had a magnitude below 2,0º.
“The number of earthquakes reported in 2019 is decreasing compared to the last three years, in particular if we compare it with the number of tremors in 2016 and 2017, which was greatly influenced by the Amatrice-Visso-Norcia sequence in central Italy. , started on August 24, 2016”, explains Maurizio Pignone, geologist at INGV.
