A general strike is expected to cause major disruptions to public transport and rail services across Italy this Friday, December 12th.

The strike was called by the country's main trade union federation, CGIL, and is expected to affect both public and private sectors. Impacts are anticipated on trains, buses, subways, schools, hospitals, and government offices.

Transportation will be the most affected.

According to the union, the strike will affect rail services between midnight and 21 pm. Regional, intercity, and long-distance trains operated by [company name] will be affected. TrenitaliaItalo, Trenord, and Trenitalia Tper services may be cancelled or subject to change.

Trenord warned that services for the Milan airports They should be replaced by buses during the day.

Despite the strike, some time slots with guaranteed operation were maintained, especially during peak hours: from 6 am to 9 am and from 18 pm to 21 pm, depending on the region.

Local transportation services, such as subways and buses in cities like Milan, Naples, and Florence, will also be affected. Services operated by Atac in Rome, however, will not participate in the strike.

Health, education and public services

Hospitals will only provide emergency services. Scheduled appointments and exams may be canceled.

Schools and universities should close or operate with a reduced number of staff.

Reasons for the strike

The CGIL is protesting against the government's draft budget for 2026, which, according to the union, ignores the cost-of-living crisis and reduces investments in essential services.

The organization also advocates for the creation of a solidarity tax on large fortunes, with the goal of raising 26 billion euros annually for healthcare and other social areas.

Another point of criticism is the increase in military spending. The CGIL calls on Italy to abandon what it calls an "arms race aimed at transforming the European economy into a war economy."

Refunds and guidance for passengers

Passengers who have already purchased train tickets are entitled to a refund or may board equivalent services, if available. Operators advise checking the status of routes before boarding.

Full information regarding guaranteed schedules and affected services is available on the Trenitalia and Italo websites, as well as through their customer service channels.
