According to Sky TG24, a 4-year-old girl died overnight at the Children's Hospital in Palermo, Sicily, suspected of having diphtheria. The child, a resident of the Zen neighborhood, had not been vaccinated immediately after birth at the parents' request, who, as they told doctors, believed that a cousin's autism had been caused by the MMR vaccine. The death was caused by multiple organ failure. The disease has not claimed any victims in Italy for over ten years.
Confirmation of the diagnosis still depends on tests. "We are conducting the analyses," said the regional health advisor, Marcello Caruso, adding that the results would be available later. The Palermo Prosecutor's Office seized the body, ordered an autopsy, and delegated the task of obtaining medical records to the Carabineros (police). The investigation aims to determine why the child did not receive the mandatory vaccinations and whether the hospital procedures were correct.
The girl first went to the hospital the previous Thursday with fever, vomiting, and loss of appetite, and was discharged with a diagnosis of tonsillitis. Two days later, on Saturday, she returned with a high fever, was intubated at Cervello Hospital, and transferred to intensive care. Doctors resorted to ECMO (extracorporeal circulation machine) and hemodialysis. Her three other siblings were vaccinated.
