President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Thursday, the 18th, that Italian companies are interested in forming partnerships with the Brazilian postal service, Correios. The state-owned company is accumulating losses and may end the year without a government agency. with a deficit of R$ 10 billion.
In a press conference held in Brasília, Lula ruled out the privatization of the company. According to him, the solution may involve international alliances.
"I know there are Italian companies wanting to come here and discuss things with the Post Office," he stated. "What may happen is the building of partnerships with companies. As long as I am president, there will be no privatization."
The Workers' Party member also indicated that the government intends to act more decisively in the face of the crisis. "I have no interest in having a state-owned company operating at a loss. The Brazilian people shouldn't have to keep paying for those losses. We decided to address the problem head-on and solve the issues at the Post Office," he said.
Billion-dollar deficit
The Brazilian postal service, Correios, recorded a loss of R$ 633 million in 2023. In 2024, the negative result jumped to R$ 2,6 billion. Between January and September 2025 alone, the deficit reached R$ 6 billion.
At this rate, the accumulated losses could reach R$ 10 billion by the end of the year.
Dialogue with Italy
In October, during an official visit to Rome, Lula met with representatives of Poste Italiane, a postal service operator in Italy. The company, mixed capitalIt went through a recovery process and is now profitable.
