Data from more than 92 million users worldwide was leaked, including data from Brazilians
After the company MyHeritage had several user emails leaked onto the web, the Personal Data Protection Commission of the Public Ministry of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) requested information from the platform. MyHeritage specializes in testing DNA, creating family trees, and researching family history. The site is used by those who need to find descendants for the process of recognizing the Italian citizenship, for example.
The letter was issued last Friday, August 10th.
The company must, among other measures, describe the nature of the security incident, inform which types of Brazilian user data were affected, whether data from people under 18 were also compromised and what security measures were taken. MyHeritage released a statement on June 6, but the MPDFT did not consider the information sufficient.
For the Commission's coordinator, prosecutor Frederico Meinberg, the possible exposure of genetic information can be very dangerous for the holder of the personal data. “Genetic data in the hands of insurance companies, health plans and credit bureaus is capable of causing harm to citizens, who will be burdened due to the probability of the emergence of diseases”, he states.
