Country provides Unique experiences for those who enjoy car travel
Italy is a country of unmistakable landscapes that offers a little bit of everything: cities with history, a lush coastline where you can find unique small towns, snow-covered mountains and huge lakes.
We suggest six road trips to do this summer:
Amalfi Coast

Legend has it that it was here, on the Amalfi Coast, that the Roman gods spent their holidays. Ravello, Amalfi and Positano are the three main cities and must-see stops. Don't forget to try the famous Amalfi Limocello – Amalfi lemons are certified by the European Union with a protected geographical indication (indicazione geografica protetta). Photo: Shutterstock
Dolomite Mountains

The Dolomites form a mountain range in the Italian Alps and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The «Grande Strada delle Dolomiti» (Great Road of the Dolomites), 186 kilometers long, begins in Cortina d'Ampezzo (which is a two-hour drive from Venice), goes up to the Falzarego Pass and ends in Bolzano, in Trentino- Alto Adige. At Falzarego Pass, you can stop and take the cable car that will take you to the top of Mount Lagazuoi. Photo: Shutterstock
Italian Lakes

The landscapes of Lombardy, with its crystal-clear Italian lakes, are worthy of a postcard. If you have time, set aside a full day to discover each of the lakes of Iseo, Como, Lugano, and Maggiore. Nature, history, gastronomy and religion make these places worth a visit. Photo: Shutterstock
Sicilia

With a very diverse coastline – white sand in the north and beaches with small rocks in the south -, the car trip around the island of Sicily is perfect for beach and sea lovers. Start in Palermo and drive to the Zingaro Nature Reserve, where you will find some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy. Photo: Shutterstock
Toscana

The bucolic landscape of Tuscany, painted by its vineyards, is perfect for a road trip. Start in Florence, pass through Pisa and Lucca, and head to the heart of the Chianti wine region. Don't forget to visit Siena and Val d'Orcia. Photo: Shutterstock
Umbria

They call it the “green heart of Italy”. Its region, full of quiet villages, Romanesque churches and Renaissance castles, is wild, exuberant and seems to still be undiscovered (by most tourists). Start your trip in the scenic town of Spoleto and then head to the walled town of Norcia. Next, drive to the Montefalco wine region. Be sure to stop by Assisi and Perugia, and finish the “road trip” in Orvieto. Photo: Shutterstock
