Imprisoned in Italy, Congresswoman Carla Zambelli (PL-SP) began a hunger strike this Thursday, the 9th. The act is an attempt to pressure Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio to deny her extradition to Brazil.
Zambelli wrote a letter to the minister stating that she will only eat again if he decides to keep her on Italian soil. The congresswoman is detained after fleeing Brazil, where she was convicted by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for illegally hacking into the National Council of Justice (CNJ)'s systems.
In the letter, Zambelli says she is "absolutely certain" that extradition would be a wrong decision. She claims to be a victim of political persecution and accuses Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of issuing an "unjust and unsubstantiated decision."
"By agreeing to keep an innocent citizen in jail, are you in league with the devil himself and are you going to get dirty too?" the parliamentarian asks in one of the excerpts.
Italian court rejects defense appeal
The decision to begin the hunger strike came a day after the Italian courts rejected an appeal filed by his lawyers. The defense was seeking to overturn the decision that kept Zambelli in closed prison while the extradition process continues.
In the letter, she states that she “hopes the minister does not wash his hands” and asks him to deny the extradition, which, according to her, “will set me free, which is the right thing to do.”
