A video from November 2017 is circulating on social media, in which then-Italian MP Renata Bueno, elected by the South American Union of Italian Emigrants (USEI), defends the imposition of generational limits for the recognition of Italian citizenship by descent.

"Noi, we welcome a rappresentation Iure Sanguinis, but it is important to discuss whether to set a limit to generation“, she says in the released excerpt, which can be translated as: “We have a representation by blood right, but it is time to discuss a generation limit”.

The content resurfaced days after the Italian government approved, on Friday, March 28, a decree that restricts the automatic granting of citizenship to only children and direct grandchildren of Italians.

Currently an international lawyer and president of Italian Citizenship Institute, Renata Bueno commented on the measure with regret. In a recent video (watch here), said she was distressed by the decision.

“We received this shocking news. […] It was approved and has already come into effect. Citizenship remains automatic for children and grandchildren, but from the third generation onwards, such as great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, we still need to see how things will unfold,” he said.

According to her, the absence of active representatives from South America in the Italian Parliament contributed to the advancement of the proposal. “I blame exclusively the absence of representatives who claim to defend us,” she declared.

Renata was a member of the Italian Parliament, serving from 2013 to 2018. After her term, she founded the Movement Passione Italia and tried for reelection in 2018 and 2022, without success.

Article updated on 09/4/2025 to state that:

The first Italian-Brazilian woman elected to the Italian parliament was Ida Matarazzo, born in São Paulo in 1905. She held a seat in the Chamber of Deputies in Rome between 1953 and 1958. Contrary to what Renata Bueno states, she was not the first to hold this position.
