Planning a trip to Europe? Fuel shortages are already threatening flights.

The situation is worrying: fewer planes available, more expensive tickets, and longer layovers.

Airlines plan to cut flights due to fuel shortages.
Airlines are planning flight cuts due to fuel shortages.

The rise in aviation fuel prices and the reduction in supply are causing alarm in the global aviation sector. Major companies such as Ryanair Lufthansa and other airlines plan to reduce takeoffs, which should raise ticket prices in the coming months.

The situation is a direct reflection of the crisis in the Middle East. In addition to rising costs, fuel has become scarce in some hubs, forcing operators to ground aircraft to avoid losses.

Cuts at European giants

Ryanair is projecting reductions in operations between June and August. The group's CEO, Michael O'Leary, stated that the cuts will occur if kerosene supplies are rationed. He anticipates that the problem will affect the entire sector during the peak of the European summer.

The Lufthansa Group is also considering drastic measures. The company is studying keeping between 20 and 40 aircraft grounded in hangars. In the worst-case scenario, the grounding would affect 5,5% of the German group's total fleet. which also controls 41% of Italy Airways.

Impact on international companies

The adjustment is not limited to Europe. The American airline United Airlines plans to reduce takeoffs by 5% by the end of the year. The measure will mainly affect flights during off-peak hours and periods between April and September.

Scandinavian airline SAS plans to suspend 1,000 flights during the month of April. In Oceania, Air New Zealand estimates that 44.000 passengers will need to be rebooked due to the cancellation of 1.100 flights until the beginning of May.

Consequences for the traveler

Reduced supply makes the airline system more rigid and tickets more expensive. With fewer seats available, promotional fares disappear. Travelers will also have fewer options for schedules and direct routes, facing longer waits in case of unforeseen circumstances.

In addition to the reduced service, travel time has increased. According to Eurocontrol, approximately 1.150 daily flights are being diverted due to the geopolitical crisis. This extra travel consumes an additional 602 tons of fuel daily.
