Data are from research published in The Lancet Public Health
Italy's healthcare system was ranked among the 10 best in the world, according to a study published by The Lancet Public Health and coordinated by the Burlo Garofolo Pediatric Institute in Trieste.
Italy occupies ninth place in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) ranking, behind Iceland, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Australia, Finland, Switzerland and Sweden. The quality of the health service was measured using the HAQ index (Health Access and Quality Index), which considers various parameters of the health system and access to cures and treatments.
“A positive picture has emerged, but with some critical points, for example, the population is aging rapidly and in Italy we have one of the lowest fertility rates in the world (1,3%) and one of the highest life expectancies, which increases the incidence of diseases linked to aging, such as dementia and Alzheimer's disease,” Lorenzo Monasta, from IRCCS, told ANSA. According to data from 2017, life expectancy in Italy is 85,3 years for women and 80,8 for men.
