The new president of the Italian Republic will be elected on January 24th. Sergio Mattarella, 12th President of the Italian Republic since February 3, 2015, will leave his mandate. 

The president of the Chamber, Roberto Fico, and the president of the Senate, Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, the first woman to occupy the second most important position in the state, therefore began the procedure that will lead to the election of the 13th president of the Italian Republic.

The President of the Republic is a constitutional body elected by Parliament in a joint session made up of delegates from the 20 Regions: 3 representatives each, with the exception of Valle d'Aosta which names only 1.

The Constitution establishes that any person with Italian citizenship, who has reached the age of 50 and enjoys civil and political rights, can be elected president.

but what is the salary of the President of the Republic? How much does the head of state earn per month for his “neutral” role in guaranteeing the Constitution and national unity? And how much does the Quirinale, the seat of government, cost?

How much does Quirinale cost?

As reported by Truenumbers, which analyzed the financial statements, the Quirinale costs 224 million euros per year – more than R$ 1 billion and 400 thousand. Of this amount, 52,3% is reserved to pay the salaries of 713 employees, according to the portal Quifinanza.

Salaries are divided as follows:

  • 82 million euros for permanent staff;
  • 7,7 million euros for non-permanent staff;
  • 9,3 million euros for seconded personnel;
  • €1.5 million euros for advisors and consultants to the Presidency of the Republic.

How much does the president of the republic earn?

Compared to the total of 224 million euros, the salary of the President of the Republic represents 0,11%, that is, 240 thousand euros of gross annual salary – just over R$ 1 million and 500 thousand. 

There are 13 monthly installments of 18.400 euros gross per month, from which income tax must be deducted. 

Your salary represents 0,24% of the total salaries of Quirinale employees, and You can never exceed this annual limit.
