In Italy, priest holds anti-vaccine mass and faithful leave church in protest

A mass “against” the vaccine. The incident happened in Casorate Primo, in the province of Pavia, in Northern Italy.

It was supposed to be a normal mass, but many angry faithful got up and left the church after the priest criticized vaccines and the line adopted by the Italian government to combat the pandemic.

“In life we must also know how to listen to those who have an opinion different from yours. If in this historical phase something different is said about the pandemic than common sentiment, you are singled out as 'No Vax'” said the priest Tarcisio Colombo, during the end-of-year celebration homily.

The incident happened on the afternoon of Friday, December 31st, in the parish Saint Victor Martyr (which is still part of the Archdiocese of Milan).

The news was reported by the newspaper Corriere della Sera and the case was reported to the Milan Curia, which is evaluating what measures to take against the priest. “The position of the diocese and the Church on the issue of vaccines is clear and reiterated several times: the invitation is to get vaccinated immediately and respect health prescriptions. Coherence demonstrated by the fact that many parishes, during the vaccination phases, made their spaces available”, said spokesperson Stefano Feminis.

The “no vax” priest did not want to say whether he was vaccinated against Covid-19: “I only answer this question to doctors, regarding personal health issues there is no need to answer those who are not doctors”.

This is not the first time that the parish priest has made “controversial” judgments. In October 2019, he shouted from the pulpit against the activist Greta Tumberg: “This girl is a danger to young people.” Some believers didn't like it. One parishioner even went to the next Mass with a sign reading “Keep your opinions to yourself".
