Christmas in Italy – Italian city creates nativity scene with wine bottle corks

The nativity scene was made with around seven thousand corks. The idea was to use sustainable materials

Christmas in Italy surprises in many ways. In Fontanellato, in the northern city, a restaurant decided to create a nativity scene made with thousands of corks.

The nativity scene is displayed outside the Locanda Nazionale restaurant.

The nativity scene, which has around seven thousand corks, recreates the main businesses of the Emilian city, including Scarfato's own restaurant, as well as the traditional Rocca Sanvitale castle, one of the main tourist attractions in Fontanellato.

In addition to the nativity scene, a life-size Christmas tree was set up by Scarfato's family using wine corks.

Sustainable Christmas

Flaminia Tortelli, Secretary of Commerce of Fontanellato, stated in an interview with HANDLE that the idea was to assemble a nativity scene with sustainable materials.

“The reason for creating a nativity scene with cork stoppers was mainly because it is a completely recyclable product. The assembly began some time ago, with the Christmas tree, then came the Fontanellato shops and, this year, the new addition was Rocca Sanvitale”, said Tortelli.

About the Christmas celebrations in Fontanellato, Tortelli explained that it will be “very different” compared to previous years.

“Christmas in Fontanellato will be very different this year. The pandemic has changed people's habits and their demands, it's strange and different. However, it is good to see that people and traders did not lose their will or surrender, even with so many difficulties. It will be a very intimate Christmas, without Christmas markets,” said Tortelli, adding that the Rocca Sanvitale castle will be illuminated.

Fontanellato is close to Parma and has just over seven thousand residents. In previous years, the village organized its Christmas market in its main square, with stalls set up around the moat that surrounds the castle.
