On the agenda: what's happening in Italy this week

Strikes in rail and air transport, a jazz festival in Umbria and a medieval tournament are shaking up Italy this week.

National train strike this Monday

Train passengers are expected to face delays and cancellations between Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 July. Trenitalia and Italo staff are striking from 21pm on Monday until 18pm on Tuesday.

The strike was called by the CUB trade union, which is demanding better working conditions, more safety on railway projects and a new collective agreement. The interruption affects regional and long-distance lines, with different impacts depending on the city and the operator.

Milder weather on Wednesday

After almost two weeks of intense heat, a cold front coming from northeastern Europe promises to alleviate temperatures from Wednesday, the 9th.

According to the Meteo.it website, temperatures are expected to drop by up to 10°C in some regions. In the north and center, maximum temperatures will be around 28°C.

In the south, the forecast is for temperatures up to 33°C. The respite will be short: a new heat wave is expected from Sunday, the 13th.

Airports on alert for strikes on Thursday

On Thursday, the 10th, passengers on flights in Italy may face disruption due to strikes in the airline industry.

EasyJet pilots and flight attendants are to strike for 24 hours. Ground staff at Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa and Venice Marco Polo airports are also to stop work on the same day.

Spot strikes are expected to take place in Cagliari Elmas (13pm to 17pm) and Naples Capodichino (11am to 15pm). According to Italian law, flights scheduled between 6am and 9am and between 18pm and 21pm cannot be cancelled due to strikes.

Rome hosts conference on reconstruction of Ukraine

On July 10th and 11th, Rome will host the fourth edition of the Ukraine Recovery Conference.

The political event brings together European governments, international organizations, businesses and local communities to discuss support for and reconstruction of Ukraine after the Russian invasion. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to deliver a keynote address.

New strike in Palermo on Friday

On Friday 11th, Falcone Borsellino airport in Palermo may experience delays and cancellations due to a 24-hour strike by employees of Gesap, the company that manages airport services.

Flights between 6am and 9am and between 18pm and 21pm remain protected by law.

Umbria Jazz Festival starts on Friday

One of the main jazz festivals in Europe, the Umbria Jazz Festival opens its summer edition on Friday the 11th and continues until the 20th. The event brings together names such as Herbie Hancock, Mitch Woods, Mark Turner and Isaiah Collier.

Medieval tournament shakes up Ascoli Piceno on Saturday

On Saturday, the 12th, the city of Ascoli Piceno, in the Marche region, hosts the traditional Giostra della Quintana. The jousting tournament, founded in 1448, takes place twice a year. Knights from six local districts compete to see who can hit a target held up by a statue of a Saracen warrior with the most accuracy and in the shortest time. Parades, flag contests and historical reenactments precede the competition.
