Lamorgese intends to return to the previous standard, reducing the practice's waiting period to 24 months
Contrary to projects that suggest limiting the rights of Italians abroad, the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese, commissioned a study to annul the decree created by his predecessor, League leader, Matteo Salvini.
Established at the beginning of December 2019, the “Salvini decree” increased the fee for awarding the Italian citizenship through marriage, both in the country itself and in the consular network, and increased the maximum period for processing the request from 24 to 48 months (four years).

Another measure imposed by the decree was the requirement of prior knowledge of the language through a proficiency test.
The candidate for naturalization must meet, at a minimum, level B1 — which is equivalent to the intermediary — so that the process can be completed.
The rule applies both to those who live in the European country and to those who have started their Italian naturalization in Brazil.
Now Lamorgese wants to return to the previous standard and reduce the bureaucratic process of obtaining citizenship from 4 to 2 years and eliminate the need for an Italian diploma.
The text is ready to be sent to parliament, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the decision.
