Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, and his sister, Karina Milei, the secretary-general of the presidency, reportedly obtained Italian citizenship thanks to their grandfather, Francesco "Ciccio" Milei, who was originally from Calabria.
The information was released by the Argentine editorial team of Australian newspaper The Globe, which cites sources close to the matter, but still lacks official confirmation from Italian or Argentine authorities.
According to the publication, the news could be announced on the eve of the Milei's arrival in Italy, on the 14th. He will participate in a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and will be the guest of honor at the party's annual congress. Brothers of Italy, whose name takes on a symbolic meaning in light of the case.
Although he has never publicly mentioned possessing an Italian passport, Milei would not be the first Argentine president with Italian citizenship. Mauricio Macri, who governed the country between 2015 and 2019, is also an Italian citizen. However, Milei could become the only one to have acquired citizenship while holding the office of president.
Francesco “Ciccio” Milei, Javier’s grandfather, arrived in Argentina in 1926, at the age of eight. Years later, he became the owner of a fruit and vegetable store, marking the beginning of the family’s journey in the South American country.
