Italy surpassed France in 2018 in the number of bookings by foreign tourists, reported the president of the National Tourism Agency (Enit), Giorgio Palmucci. “In terms of foreign presence, Italy, with 216,5 million bookings totaled in 2018, representing an increase of 2,8%, surpassed France, which had 140,7 million,” said Palmucci, while presenting a three-year plan for tourism in Italy at an event in Rome with Minister Gian Marco Centinaio.
Spain, however, remains the top European destination for foreign travelers, with 301 million reservations made in 2018, according to Enit. “Tourism is a sector that generated almost 429 million presences and 41,7 billion euros of foreign spending in Italy in 2018”, added Palmucci.
For the period from 2019 to 2021, Enit intends to organize 600 events around the world to talk about Italy as a travel destination. The focus will be on sustainability, but also on luxury and slow tourism.
The new law will now be reviewed by the European Union's courts. And there are European precedents that strengthen the defense of descendants.

Among the events already scheduled are the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death, the Giro d'Itália and the Settimana della Cucina Italiana. “Italy is a country to see, eat and drink. You can see a stupendous sea, UNESCO heritage sites and cities of art, but also have enogastronomic experiences”, highlighted, in turn, the Italian Minister of Agriculture and Tourism.

For comparison purposes, around 6,62 million foreign tourists visited Brazil in 2018. The number is practically the same as in the last three years, showing a stagnation in the tourist flow here. In 2017, the number remained practically the same, with 6,59 million visits registered.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, from January to December 2018, international tourists injected US$5,92 billion into the Brazilian economy.
