Italy remains the preferred destination for tourists from São Paulo. A Datafolha survey conducted in March showed the European country as the leader in multiple travel categories.
In the historical segment, Italy maintained first place for the fourth consecutive year, with 15% of mentions. Rome, the capital, appeared alone with 13%, resulting in a technical tie.
Among dream destinations, Italy received 7% of the preference. Japan and Greece tied within the margin of error, with 5% each.
In wine tourism, the country was mentioned by 10% of those interviewed. Toscana, Puglia and Piedmont were remembered for the outstanding labels. Chile (11%) and Argentina (9%) were close behind.
In the international gastronomy category, the lead was wide: 35% chose Italy. France, in second place, had 7%.
Italian culture is present in São Paulo
The capital of São Paulo is home to between 15 and 20 million people of Italian descent. It is one of the largest Italian communities outside of Europe.
In June, typical dishes such as pasta, fogazzas, pizzas and cannolis gain strength at the June festivals, such as those of São Vito and Nossa Senhora de Achiropita.
Historical and religious tourism boost visits
The Roman Colosseum remains a symbol of the Eternal City, which was once the capital of the Roman Empire. The Vatican, an enclave within Rome, has seen an increase in visitors following the death of Pope Francis, who was succeeded by Leo XIV.
Mass tourism worries authorities
Italy, along with Spain and France, is reinforcing measures against excessive tourist numbers. In Venice, for example, visitors who do not stay overnight in the city pay an extra fee on certain days.
