Italy leads EU ranking in life expectancy, says OECD.

Italy recorded the highest life expectancy in the European Union in 2024, with an average of 84,1 years. This data was released on Thursday, the 11th, by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). (OECD).

The number represents a new record for the country and surpasses the pre-Covid-19 pandemic level by six months. Italy shares the lead with Sweden, which reached the same mark.

The report released by the OECD compiles the health profiles of EU member states. According to the document, cardiovascular diseases and cancer are responsible for more than half of the deaths recorded in Italy.

The leading causes of preventable deaths in the country are lung cancer, Covid-19, and ischemic heart disease.

Despite the rapidly aging population, the elderly Italians They have health indicators that are above the European average. Even so, the country faces challenges such as undiagnosed or untreated hypertension and rising smoking rates.

In the OECD ranking, Italy and Sweden are followed by Spain (84 years), Luxembourg (83,5) and Malta (83,3). The lowest life expectancies were recorded in Bulgaria (75,9), Romania (76,6) and Latvia (76,7). The European Union average is 81,7 years.

Among men, life expectancy in Italy is 82 years, behind Sweden at 82,6. Among women, the country ranks second with 86 years, behind Spain, which registers 86,6 years.
