Italy and Brazil won historic silver and bronze medals, respectively, on Tuesday (30) in the artistic gymnastics team final at the Paris Olympic Games in France.
On the Brazilian side, the podium achieved at Arena Bercy was an unprecedented feat for the country, while Italy once again won a medal in this category after almost 100 years.
The Brazilian team, formed by Rebeca Andrade, Flávia Saraiva, Lorrane Oliveira, Jade Barbosa and Julia Soares, scored 164.497 points and surpassed Great Britain, which closed the competition with 164.263.
For much of the event, the Brazilian team fluctuated between fifth and sixth, but the turning point came with Saraiva and Andrade in the jump. The gymnasts shined on the apparatus and were essential for the historic bronze.
Represented by Manila Esposito, Alice D'Amato, Angela Andreoli, Elisa Iorio and Giorgia Villa, the Azzurri scored 165.494 points in the table and were just ahead of the United States, led by Simone Biles, who secured gold with 171.296.
The Italian team had not won a medal in the artistic gymnastics team event since winning silver in the 1928 edition of the Olympics, in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Brazil reached the mark of four medals in Paris, with three bronzes and one silver, while Italy has nine, two golds, four silvers and three bronzes. (HANDLE)
