The film “Gladiator 2”, sequel to the acclaimed and award-winning 2000 blockbuster, directed by Ridley Scott, hits Brazilian cinemas next Thursday (14).
The film is the sequel to “Gladiator”, starring Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris and Oliver Reed, which won five statuettes at the 2001 Oscars, including Best Picture.
However, the sequel features a new cast, including Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, May Calamawy and Derek Jacobi.
“Gladiator 2” begins years after the events of the first film, in which Maximus (Crowe), a powerful Roman general, arouses the wrath of Marcus Aurelius’ (Richard Harris) son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), before the emperor’s death. When the heir seizes power, he is sentenced to death, but manages to escape and goes into hiding while seeking revenge.
The production, however, will have a time jump to include Mescal as the protagonist. The new trailer shows Lucius Verus (Mescal), a nobleman forced to give up his privileges to become a gladiator, in an epic sequence of images as he is about to face a rhinoceros, a horde of angry baboons and a former military commander played by Pascal.
According to early leaked rumors, the two tyrannical emperors, Caracalla and Geta, played by Quinn and Hechinger respectively, appear to be even crazier than the character played by Phoenix in the first film. (HANDLE)
